Aberystwyth’s Rhys Norrington-Davies is focusing on Wales’ opening Euro 2020 Group A match on Saturday with every effort made to make the players feel at home in Azerbaijan.

Manager Rob Page, the players, coaches and support staff flew out to Baku on Monday and have settled into the training camp at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican.

Wales have created a home from home as their preparations intensify with the aim of making a winning start against Switzerland.

Built 80 years ago in Joseph Stalin’s honour, the stadium is covered in banners, posters, and team mottos, and a marquee has been installed housing warm-up equipment, including foam rollers, mats, box jumps and a television.

The players are in good spirits despite having the tight security for a Covid-era Euros, having to stay in their strict bubble and only allowed to go to their training camp, their hotel or the Olympic stadium for their games against Switzerland on Saturday and Turkey the following Wednesday.

Norrington Davies’ father Patrick said: “He’s absolutely loving it.

“The temperature is hot but bearable and the training ground is only a 10 minute bus ride from the hotel and they are escorted with roads closed everywhere they go.

“It’s building up nicely for the first game with confidence in the camp growing.”
