NEWCASTLE Emlyn manager Owain Thomas is hoping that it will be an historic week for the club when they take part in back-to-back cup finals.

The Reds take on high-flying Montgomeryshire League side Four Crosses in the Emrys Morgan Cup Final at Rhayader on Friday, before facing Llandysul in the Costcutter League Cup Final at Aberaeron on Monday.

The Reds are also in still contention for the Costcutter Ceredigion League Division One championship, the Cwpan Coffa Dai ’Dynamo’ Davies and the Bay Cup.

The last time they won the Emrys Morgan Cup was in 1992, when they beat St Dogmaels in the final.

The Costutter Ceredigion League has been represented in the Emrys Morgan Cup Final in the last eight seasons, with New Quay winning in 2011, Lampeter in 2014, Cardigan in 2015 and Llandysul in 2017.

“As a squad we have been playing well most of the season, and to have this much to play for at this stage of the season is brilliant,” said Thomas.

“We have certainly given ourselves a great chance of lifting silverware again this season, and we are all looking forward to what hopefully will be a great Bank Holiday weekend.”

Newcastle Emlyn reached the final of the Emrys Morgan Cup with a solid 3-0 win over Costcutter League leaders Lampeter on the 3G pitch at Richmond Park on Monday evening.

The deadlock was broken after the interval when Dion Phillips stormed down the left flank and slipped the ball between the keeper and last defender for Jake Kelly to tap home.

The Reds had a great opportunity to double the lead when Kelly was taken down in the box, but John Curran was unable to convert the penalty.

They sealed their win when a free kick was hoisted into the box and teenager Cory Davies was at the far post ready to head the ball home.

In the dying minutes Daniel Davies applied the coup de grâce when he was put through for a one-on-one with the keeper and lobbed the ball into the empty net to make it 3-0.

The Reds will take on Four Crosses after they beat Forden United 4-0 in their previously postponed semi-final match at Newtown’s Latham Park, with goals from Jack Jones, Harry Davies, with a brace, and Shin Miah.

“We are very pleased to be in the final,” said Crosses manager Mike Barton, who has a wealth of experience, having played as a goalkeeper for Newtown in the Welsh Premier, and having previously managed Guilsfield, Caersws and Llanfair in the Cymru Alliance, as well as Oswestry in the North West Counties League.

“We were really pleased with our display in the semi-final on Saturday.

“We worked extremely hard and got our rewards, and it was probably our best performance of season so far.

“We can now look forward to Friday against Newcastle Emlyn, who we lost to in Central Wales Cup, but it should be a cracker of a game, with two good sides really going at it.”

Newcastle Emlyn had beat Four Crosses 3-1 in extra time in the Central Wales Challenge Cup, before bowing out to Bow Street in the fourth round.

They reached the Emrys Morgan Cup final by beating Machynlleth Reserves, Cardigan, Knighton Reserves, Crannog, Ffostrasol and Lampeter.

Meanwhile Four Crosses, who resigned from Spar Mid Wales League Two at the end of last season, reached the final with wins over Maesglas, Waterloo Rovers, Bishops Castle, Tregaron Turfs and Forden United.
