FORTY members of Clwb Golff Borth & Ynyslas Golf Club set off on Wednesday, 16 September for the 75th playing of the prestigious Convention Cup, this year being held at Formby Hall Golf Resort and led by Captain Harri Jones.
The opening competition on Wednesday was played in teams of four, with two scores counting on the first six holes, three scores counting on holes 7–12, and all four scores counting over the final six holes.
The draw had thrown together some very interesting combinations of players, with several groups quickly being labelled as the early favourites!
As well as the main team competition, there were prizes for two’s, Nearest the Pin on the 6th and Longest Drive on the 7th.
Three two’s were recorded: Alan Shaw and Kevin Lewis on the 2nd, and Richard Lucas on the 13th.
Nearest the Pin – 6th: Martin Haynes Longest Drive – 7th: Adam Roberts
Adam’s winning drive was certainly not the longest drive of the day by any stretch of the imagination, but crucially for Adam, it was the longest one that also managed to stay on the fairway!
Wednesday Result: 1, Derek Saunders, Dan Basnett, Gez Evans and Alan Shaw – 96 points; 2, Bob Gill, Martin Haynes, Simon Bentley and Peter Taylor – 91 points; 3, Gareth Baker, Steve Salt, Adam Roberts and Jac M Williams – 88 points
Following Wednesday evening’s dinner, attention turned to the draw for Thursday’s Convention Cup.
All 40 names were placed into the Convention Cup, with the draw for playing partners conducted by 2026 Welsh PGA Champion Zach Galliford, adding something special to the evening and setting up the groups for the following day.
Thursday – The 75th Convention Cup
Thursday saw all 40 players compete for the main event of the trip – the 75th Convention Cup.
Once again, there were additional prizes for two’s, Nearest the Pin on the 13th and Longest Drive on the 18th.
Six two’s were recorded during the competition: Alan Shaw and Nathan Perkins on the 2nd, Steve Beresford on the 6th, Jac M Williams on the 13th, and Eric Jones and Alan Shaw on the 16th.
This completed a remarkable couple of days for Alan Shaw, who recorded three two’s across the two competitions, as well as being in the winning team on Wednesday.

The leaderboard continued to change throughout the afternoon as the later starters completed their rounds and began climbing into contention.
Harvey Perkins’ 34-point total was on the very last card to be handed in, dramatically pipping Convention Cup specialist Derek Saunders by a single point.
In doing so, Harvey became the youngest member to win the prestigious Convention Cup, making the victory particularly memorable.
It also completed a fantastic family double. Harvey’s mum, Laura, had won the Ladies’ Convention at Hawkstone Park earlier in the season, meaning mother and son both claimed their respective Convention titles in the same year – a tremendous achievement for the Perkins family.
Friday morning saw a number of members begin their journeys back to Borth & Ynyslas, while 25 players ventured once more onto the Championship Course at Formby Hall Golf Resort for a final nine-hole competition over the front nine.
Friday Result: 1, Dan Basnett – 18 points ( won on back six); 2, Paul Hicks – 18 points; Equal 3rd, Peter Basnett and Stephen Beresford – 17 points
The original plan had been to finish the Convention with an afternoon round on the Woodhey Dunes Par-3 Course. However, with the forecast predicting a very wet afternoon, the sensible decision was taken to conclude proceedings while everyone was still dry and begin the journey home.
A Memorable 75th Convention Cup
A thoroughly enjoyable three days were had by all at Formby Hall Golf Resort, with excellent food, good company and plenty of competitive but friendly golf.
The 75th playing of the Convention Cup provided another memorable chapter in the long history of this special club competition.
