A VERY busy month of golf at Aberystwyth culminated in the playing of the Corporation Cup, arguably the most prestigious of all the ‘boards’ competitions at the Club.

Played over two rounds on consecutive days, consistent golf rewards the winner .

In round one, leading the way was Martin Harries with 78-10-68, with Simon Edwards in second place 75-5-70 holding off Harvi Singh 81-11-70 on the countback. Singh similarly held off Clive D Williams 81-11-70.

In round two, Steve Hughes led the way on 75-6-69, having a better back nine than young Jack Rimmer’s 73-4-69, who held off Dylan Morris 74-5-69 on countback and Martyn Haynes 79-9-70.

Coupled with a steady opening round of 72, Jack Rimmer’s second round 69 for a total of 141 was good enough to win the cup from Dylan Morris’ two rounds of 73 and 69 for a total of 142.

Although he is still a teenager, Jack has now won the Corporation Cup twice.

Another interesting anomaly regarding the Rimmer family is that three generations of the family have now won board competitions in the same year. Grandfather Paul won the Bown Cup, while father Mark won the Redvers Llewellyn Cup.

Jack’s success in the Corporation Cup completes an unusual hat-trick of wins for this Llanilar golfing family.

As mentioned, in the Bown Cup for 14+ handicappers Paul Rimmer won with 100-28-72 from Ben Willis 95-20-75. Graham Saunders Jr with 92-14-78 was third and John Scullion 98-18-80 fourth.

An extra medal played on the same day saw Harvi Singh lead the way with 85-11-74 from Anthony Griffiths 81-5-76 and Jeremy Edmunds third with 83-6-77, beating Martyn Haynes 86-9-77 fourth on countback.

In the first round of the Redvers Llewellyn, Chris O’Rourke led with 92-21-71, with Wayne Gornall the best of three nett 72s with 82-10-72. Third was Ioan Rhys Richards 78-6-72 and Graham Saunders Jr with 86-14-72.

In another extra Stableford competition Terry Davies was the winner with 39 off 19, beating Ray Dodd 38 off 20, Anthony Griffiths 37 off 5 and Pat Jones 36 off 4.

On the final weekend of May, a Bank Holiday Stableford took place with Graham Saunders Jr winning on countback with 39 points off 14, from Sion Meredith, 39 off 5. Third was Harvi Singh, 37 off 11, and Jeremy Edmunds, 35 off 6 fourth.

In the Daily Mail Foursomes, Aneurin Thomas and Ioan Richards fell at the latest hurdle to a Llandrindod pair, while Pat Jones and Tim Jenkins reached the quarter final of their zone in the WGU Victory Shield, beating a team from Carmarthen on the 19th green.

The Tigers got their Dyfed League programme off to a good start with a 6-3 win against Glynhir, while the Rabbits had an avenging win against Penrhos at home by 4 matches to 2.

The Seniors’ programme started with a loss away at Penrhos by 4 matches to 2, but they regained respectability with two good wins at home, beating Cilgwyn by 5-2 and Cardigan by 4-2.
