ATTENDING a fun day at Aberystwyth Golf Club as a seven-year-old led to a youngster becoming the club’s youngest ever championship winner.

Logan Scherpe won the club championship, a 36-hole competition, at just 13 years of age.

The Ysgol Penglais pupil shot a 76 and 73 gross to win the competition by two shots.

His handicap is now 3.6 and he is an up-and-coming star for the club.

After winning the stroke play championship Logan said: “I made some mistakes in my first round and at the start of the second but then managed to play consistent and good golf.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to be rewarded with the win in the end, especially being the youngest winner of this championship in 110 years.”

Logan hopes to fulfil his potential to play for Wales one day and has the ambition to play university golf in the US and, if good enough, to become a tour player.

Having enjoyed playing golf at the fun day, he started to go to the driving range and soon after had his first golf lessons.

His first Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) handicap was 19 at the age of nine, encouraging him to play in national junior golfing events such as the Ping Welsh Junior Golf Tour whilst also participating in junior events at club level.

His first bigger trophy was the Ceredigion Shield (a county competition specifically designed for juniors) which he won at the age of 10.

After playing regular men’s competitions and winning numerous club trophies he lowered his handicap to 11.

He was soon selected to play for Dyfed Under-14s and was also presented with a talented sports award from the Ceredigion sports council.

At the age of 12 he won national Under-14s events and decided to test himself further afield playing in the European Junior Golf tour in Northern Ireland, winning his qualifier which granted him access to the season finals in Spain.

Despite having never played abroad, Logan not only managed to win his age group in those finals, but also had the second best net score of the competition throughout all age groups.

He returned home Under-12s European Junior Tour Champion, lowering his handicap to seven in the process.

His success also earned him a place in the worldwide invitational only Champions of Champions Tournament, which has been delayed due to Covid travel restrictions.

In the same year he was crowned junior player of the year at Cilgwyn Golf Club.

After the lockdown he joined Aberystwyth Golf Club where he managed to lower his handicap again, to 3.6 winning numerous men’s competitions including the club stroke play championship.

Also playing for Aberdovey Golf Club, his handicap improvement has now seen him being selected for Caernarfonshire Under-18s and North Wales Under-18s, playing against low handicap juniors up to five years older than him.

Logan is extremely active on Instagram trying to encourage other juniors to play golf by documenting his own journey whilst also trying to raise money for children’s charities.

His profile (logigolfer_junior_golfer_wales) has amassed almost 6,500 followers from the world of golf in only a year and Logan hopes to grow this further.
