CEREDIGION, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen’s best junior runners shone at the Dyfed Primary Schools Athletics Championships, held at Carmarthen.

On a pleasant and sunny evening in West Wales, after a rather wet and windy start to the day, the 29th annual event attracted 300 athletes and hundreds of spectators.

This event has grown steadily every year since Hedydd Davies, the Carmarthen Harriers’ chairman, organised the first event some 26 years ago.

The overall team winners this year was Ysgol Y Dderwen, who also won this competition a few years ago, by scoring 40 points. Not far behind were Ysgol y Castell with 38, Tenby Juniors second with 33 Griffith Jones third with 24 and Gelli Aur fourth with 23.

Aberaeron were the highest-placed Ceredigion team in sixth place, with Tregaron’s Ysgol Henry Richard achieving joint 13th place, and Lampeter’s Ysgol Bro Pedr 17th out of 23 teams.

Individually, Aberaeron’s Jessica Jones won gold in the 70m hurdles; Lee Hodges won silver in the Shott Putt, and Seren Davies won a bronze medal in the 800m.

Meanwhile Zara Evans of Ysgol Henry Richard, Tregaron won the high jump, with Amelia Budylowska of Ysgol Bro Pedr, Lampeter taking the silver medal.

A team will now be chosen to take part in the annual Dyfed and West Glamorgan Schools match at Swansea University on 13 July.

The presentation of awards to the top three athletes in each event was made by the Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen, Cllr Wyn Thomas and Sylvia Perkins, along with Coralie Steel, President of Rotary Club, Carmarthen.
