DESPITE the adverse weather and heavy underfoot conditions, the large gathering at Parc Drefach witnessed a hard fought encounter in the Ceredigion derby.
The first quarter was contained mostly in home territory as Tregaron’s determination threatened an early success, but the Seagulls’ defence, with flankers Daniel Lewis and Iwan Evans outstanding, remained resolute and slowly but surely they managed to gain the initiative.
Home nerves were settled with the hosts’ first foray into the Tregaron half, which resulted in a penalty success for Rhodri Jenkins, but it took until the break for the lead to be extended. Full back Morgan Llewelyn, who was a constant threat throughout, weaved his way from his own half to cross under the posts, giving outside half Jenkins an easy conversion.
As the second half developed so did the visitors’ resolve diminish and the Aberaeron backline soon created a number of openings. A flowing move paved the way for the second try, with the ball finding Rhodri Thomas to cross in the corner. Winger Thomas was unlucky not to add to his tally as a blatant trip went unpunished, preventing a clear run to the line.
With the pressure mounting, mid way through the half Llewelyn claimed his second try, benefiting from a deft pass from Jenkins to cross the whitewash.
Not to be outdone it was brother Dafydd Llewelyn at scrum half who darted over from close range for the additional bonus point, and the conversion success completed a satisfying afternoon for Aberaeron after the initial trepidations. A third win on the bounce will increase confidence for the trip to Haverfordwest.
