A TALENTED young skier from Llanbedr is going from strength to strength after another successful summer season.

Ysgol Ardudwy pupil Lowri Howie won the Welsh and British, Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the Under-12s girls category.

More recently she won Welsh Open Championships at Llandudno.

Winner of the Sports Personality of Year 2019 Anglesey and Gwynedd School Sports Award, Lowri attended a wedding the day before the Llandudno event.

She said: “I didn’t want to go home but had to leave the wedding party early as I needed to get up early to compete in the in the morning.

“But it was worth it as I continued with my winning streak and won the girls Under-12s Welsh Open Championships.

“But best of all, and a totally unexpected surprise, I was also presented with the Helen May Welsh Club Skier of the Year award.”

The award is presented to a Welsh racer who lives in Wales and can be awarded for all sorts of reasons.

This year, it was to recognise Lowri’s achievements for someone so young, unbeaten this summer season and managing to podium in 72 races in the last four years. It was also awarded for being supportive to her team-mates.

She added: “In order to compete and continue with my journey and achieve my goals there is going to be a lot of sacrifice like missing partying with my friends and family celebrations.

“However it provides me with some fantastic opportunities.

“I love sports, especially skiing as I like going fast, the adrenaline, it’s fun, and I make a lot of friends, and I hope I will inspire other children to participate in sport.”

To finish the summer ski season Lowri won the girls Under-12 category at the Welsh Secondary Schools Championships in Llangrannog over the weekend representing Ysgol Ardudwy and the fastest girl not in the Welsh Squad.

At 11 years old, she was the youngest girl competitor of the day but the third fastest girl overall in the Under-12s to Under-18s age categories with only 0.01 of a second separating her from second place.

“I was totally confused and it was totally unexpected to be awarded a massive shield for fastest girl not in the Welsh Squad.

“You need to be in the Under-14s age category to be eligible and be considered, so hopefully next year, if I continue to train and work hard, I will be successful, and become a member of the Welsh squad.

“For now I’m looking forward to the winter season with Team Evolution in Austria and competing in the Alpine races.”
