FIREWORKS fanatics have been warned to keep safe during this year’s festivities.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is appealing to young people to avoid serious injury, or even death, from playing with fireworks and lighting bonfires during half-tern holidays.
With Bonfire Night upon us, the fire and rescue service is urging the public of north Wales to be vigilant with fireworks and to attend an organised display.
Stuart Millington, senior fire safety manager, said: “Safety at this time of year is the responsibility of us all.
“We cannot over emphasise that the best way to reduce the number of injuries during bonfire celebrations is by attending organised events.
“They are the safest type of displays, have the best facilities and offer the best value for money.
“Bonfire celebrations see an increase in anxiety for senior citizens and pet owners, so attending community events helps reduce this distress.
“Visit our website or Facebook pages for a list of organised displays across north Wales.
“If you must use fireworks yourself, please follow the fireworks safety code.”
Gwynedd residents are also urged to inform the fire service if they intend to have a bonfire by calling 01931 522006.
North Wales Police are also urging caution. Inspector Julie Sheard warned: “We know the majority of people enjoy this time of year sensibly and we are not out to spoil their fun but unfortunately there is a minority who are intent on causing problems and use Bonfire Night as an excuse to commit crime and act anti-socially.
“We will be working in partnership with other agencies to keep people safe and make sure an exciting and enjoyable period is not tarnished by the minority.
"To ensure the safety of all, we would also encourage residents to attend organised firework displays, which will be well publicised in the local press prior to 5 November.”
If you are aware of people misusing fireworks to either damage property or to cause injury, contact North Wales Police on 101, or in an emergency dial 999.
