A FREAK accident saw a bedroom curtain set alight due to an unfortunately-placed mirror and some paper.

The setting sun on Sunday evening was so powerful that a concave mirror caught the sun’s rays and concentrated the light onto some paper causing it to burst into flames at a house in Llandecwyn.

Firefighters were called to the property at 7.45pm on Sunday after neighbours raised the alarm.

The fire service sent crews from Harlech and Porthmadog to tackle the blaze that was confined to one bedroom.

They spent just over an hour getting the flames under control. Nobody was in the property at the time.

A spokeswoman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We attended a fire at a property in Llandecwyn at 7.45pm.

“There was fire damage to a curtain and to the window sill.

“The fire was caused when the sun reflected off a concave mirror and ignited paper in the bedroom of the property.”

Nobody was injured and crews stood down at around 9pm.
