St Brieuc
THE ST Brieuc/Aberystwyth People in Partnership Association (twinning group) have been very active this autumn. In October there was a very successful official visit, in which the mayor, Cllr Dr Endaf Edwards, participated. The Aberystwyth Silver Band also visited St Brieuc at this time, and played in two well-received concerts. It was their first visit for 25 years.Following this, the committees have been busy arranging work experience for a student from St Brieuc. The student, Zoe Auffret, is in her final year of a BA degree at the Université Occidental de Bretagne, and was very keen to study the six weeks of internship she needs to complete her degree at the National Library of Wales and/or the library at Aberystwyth University. The twinning group have successfully ar-ranged both.“I am so excited,” said Zoe, whose English is excellent. “All my friends are jealous.”The twinning committee is delighted to have been able to broker this opportunity for the St Brieuc student.“We hope this will be the first of many such exchanges,” said Cllr Wendy Morris. “Maybe there will be the opportunity of a student from the Aberystwyth studying in St Brieuc.”“It is a great way of encouraging relationships between the towns,” added Anne Hobbs, chair-man of the twinning committee. “I hope that Zoe will have a worthwhile time here and that her enthusiasm will help promote Aberystwyth.”In the new year the committee will be looking to help groups who wish to visit St Brieuc on an exchange.
Choral Society
THIS coming Saturday, 12 December, sees Aberystwyth Choral Society performing Handel’s great and much-loved masterpiece Messiah in the Great Hall of the Arts Centre at 8pm. The performance will be the culmination of the hard work undertaken by choristers at their weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals which started in mid September. However, the week before the concert will be, as usual, even busier for both the choristers and the conductor David Russell Hulme. An additional rehearsal will be held in the Old Hall on Wednesday evening in addition to the normal Tuesday evening one. On Friday evening there will be the staging rehearsal in the Great Hall followed by the dress rehearsal at 2pm on the Saturday after-noon when the choir will be joined by the full orchestra and the four professional soloists – Sally Harrison, soprano; Louise Crane, mezzo soprano; Justin Lavender, tenor; and Paul Carey Jones, bass. The performance, under the baton of David Russell Hulme, will be at 8pm and tickets have been selling well at the Arts Centre booking office. The choristers will then enjoy a welcome Christmas break until early in the new year when the choir starts rehearsing the Verdi Requiem for its Easter concert.

NOS WENER, 4 Rhagfyr, croesawyd Illtud Griffiths gan ein llywydd, Terry Edwards.Mae Illtud yn bysgotwr o fri ond y tro hwn ei alwedigaeth, sef deintydd, oedd testun ei sgwrs. Cyn dyfodiad yr anesthetig cyntaf yn 1844 ychydig o hanes oedd yna i ddeintyddiaeth, ac roedd pobl oedd yn dioddef o’r ddannoedd yn gweddïo am wellhad, neu’n dilyn gwahanol ddefodau rhyfedd, ac afiach weithiau.Newidiodd anesthetig yr holl fyd, ond roedd hi’n 1943 cyn i’r anesthetig lleol a ddefnyddir heddiw ddod yn gyffredin. Cawson nifer o storïau doniol gan Illtud a wnaeth hon yn noson ddifyr ac addysgiadol, ac yn agoriad llygad. O safbwynt deintyddiaeth, doedd yr hen ddy-ddiau ddim yn ddyddiau da.
