Facing the worst public health crisis in several generations, you would think that those who provide care for the vulnerable would be pulling together to maximise effectiveness.
There is an understandable reluctance on the part of the private sector to be critical of the county council, but the North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care have been talking off the record to several care homes and it appears that the county council is reluctant to spend any of the money allocated to local authorities by the Welsh Government on the private sector. The money was intended to compensate for the additional staff and equipment needed in the fight against Covid-19. The private care home sector in Wales has been in a precarious situation for some years and a number of them are incurring Covid-19 related costs running into the tens of thousands of pounds.
Without these homes, Ceredigion would have nowhere to care for our family and friends, yet they expect them to do so with minimal financial or practical assistance. The county council are not responsible for the pandemic, however, this must surely a time to work together rather than pulling up the drawbridge.
