THE OCTOBER meeting began with Mari, the president, warmly welcoming all the ladies present including two visitors, Grace and Alison. After singing Meirion accompanied by Blodwen, Mari congratulated the darts team on their recent success. Two teams reached the final and team A – Pam, Susan, Rose and Geinor — came away with the trophy. The minutes were read and approved followed by Val reading the September and October county newsletters. Dining out will be at Indiana in Fairbourne on Friday, 13 November and the Christmas dinner will be at the Min y Môr on Thursday, 17 December.The speaker was Joan Pugh, a retired headteacher. The subject of her talk was ‘A passage to India with apologies to E M Forster’. She began by telling the group that the reason behind her visit to India was in memory of her late brother who died suddenly and had always wanted to return to central north India with his wife. Joan’s talk was hilarious in places, very moving, entertaining and extremely inspiring. All present said they enjoyed listening to her adventures and admired her for the very hard work both physically and emotionally that she does for the poor in Calcutta.

THE NEXT monthly meeting is on Wednesday, 11 November, in the Arts Room at the Dragon Theatre. The speaker is Alan Vincent and his subject is the Rhine, past and present.If you are curious and would like to find out more about the U3A, and are retired or semi-retired, come along for a warm welcome. The meeting begins at 1.30pm.
Challenge Gwynedd
MEMBERS of the public are invited to the Dragon Theatre on Thursday, 5 November between 2pm and 4pm to discuss proposals to make substantial cuts in the budget for the coming years with Gwynedd Council staff.
Royal British Legion
THIS year’s Remembrance Sunday commemoration will be held at the War Memorial in Park Road on Sunday, 8 November. There will be a Remembrance Service in St John’s Church which commences at 10.45am. The parade will line up at around 11.30am following on from the service and march down Park Road to the War Memorial. Refreshments are being provided by the RAOB at the Buffs Club after the services. There will also be a small reflection at the War Memorial at 11am on Wednesday, 11 November.
First Friday
THIS MONTH’S cinematic offering at the Dragon Theatre is to be Mr Holmes. It tells of Holmes’ attempts to solve a 30-year-old case with the help of his housekeeper’s son. Sir Ian McKellen stars. The film will start at 7.30pm.
