A five-year-old boy who received severe burns in a tragic fire that took the life of his younger brother just over a year ago is “back to his energetic self” and is hoping to raise thousands for a charity which helped during his recovery.

The fire at Ffair Rhos, near Pontrhydfendigaid, on 19 January last year sadly killed young Zac Harvey, 3, and left his brother, Harley, in a critical condition in hospital.

He suffered burns and lung damage, remaining in hospital for six weeks, with doctors saying it was “touch and go” on his survival.

Mum Erin Harvey said Harley has now “bounced back” and has set his mind to raising money for a charity which provides ongoing care for victims of burn injuries.

Together with his 10-year-old brother Alex, Harley plans to climb the stairs at his home more than 3,400 times over 12 weeks – the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest.

Erin said: “Harley has bounced back with his incredible can-do attitude and is back to being his super active and energetic self. So, Harley and his big brother Alex have decided they want to raise money for The Welsh Dragon Burns Club – part of the Swansea Bay Health Charity – by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest from home.

“This means climbing 8,848 metres, which is 44,239 steps. So they will climb our stairs at home a whopping 3,403 times over a 12-week period.”

“The Welsh Dragon Burns Club provides ongoing care and services for children like Harley.

Erin added: “Harley has received amazing care in Morriston Hospital in Swansea which he will continue to receive throughout his childhood.

“And once activities can return, will be involved with this amazing charity and all of their activities and events.

“We hope to raise as much money as we can.

“We are very grateful for all of your support.”

The brothers are hoping to raise £3,000 for charity.
