ABERYSTWYTH’S Morrisons store will become one of the company’s 500 stores across the UK to donate all unsold food to local community organisations.
The news follows a trial in 100 stores in Yorkshire and across the north-east of England, where all unsold food still safe to eat was donated to groups that were able to make use of it.
From early next year, local charities and community groups in Aberystwyth will have the chance to benefit from the store’s unsold food each week, including fresh fruit and vegetables as well as tinned and packaged food.
Although Morrisons says it minimises food waste by discounting products before they can no longer be sold or using them in their staff canteens, they did admit that all waste food is currently used to generate energy rather than feed people in need.
