The Mermaid Fish Bar has been cooking their fantastic, award-winning, 100% natural fish and chips since 1964, right on the beautiful Mid Wales coastline in Barmouth. They have served countless satisfied customers during that time and plan to celebrate their 60th anniversary in a special and unique way on Thursday, 6 June.

This special achievement will be commemorated with an offer that cannot be matched. You will have the opportunity to buy fish and chips for an old sixpence, and they will be open from 12 pm to 12 am. If you don’t happen to have an old sixpence, you can buy them on the day at the shop for just £2.50.

You can join them throughout the day and be served by former employees who will be making a sentimental guest return, whilst being serenaded by a live band that will play their diverse and varied music around the bus stop area over the road.

To honour the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings – the largest naval, land and air operation in history – National Fish and Chips Day will be celebrating the nation’s favourite dish on the same day too.

Originally The Victoria Hotel, owned by British Rail, The Mermaid Fish Bar has been serving delicious seaside food since 1964, first run by Nora Evans of Liverpool. Today, The Mermaid is still a family-run business, with Will and Nina Huntley at the helm. The quality of their food and service has seen them land numerous awards and contribute positively to the community.

The Mermaid are proud sponsors of Barmouth & Dyffryn United FC, giving generous and regular donations to the Magpies. Will Huntley is the current chairman and has rejuvenated, improved and developed the club. These improvements are constantly being made, with new additions such as floodlights and extra seating making it the envy of most visiting teams.

Such is the quality of the food, The Mermaid was listed in The Times newspaper’s top 10 fish and chip shops in the UK in 2022. Before that, they won the Takeaway of the Year, North Wales, at the second annual Food Awards Wales in 2016. This classy black-tie event acknowledged and celebrated the accomplishments, determination, and hard work of various professionals, establishments, and businesses from the Welsh food sector.
