YOUNGSTERS are being asked to design a mural to adorn the sides of an underpass along the river Rheidol.

If you are aged between nine and 25 and have some creative ideas on how to give a fresh new look to the Pen-y-Bont Bridge Underpass in Penparcau, then Ceredigion Youth Service wants to hear from you.

The youth service in cooperation with Ceredigion County Council’s Economy and Regeneration Team, has launched a design competition that will see the winning designs displayed on two large sections of the underpass between Penparcau and the Morrison’s supermarket.

The underpass, which regularly attracts vandalism, will be filled with a large, colourful mural, reflecting the heritage of Penparcau and other local areas, representing what Penparcau and Aberystwyth mean to young people.

Ceredigion Youth Service will work with renowned artist, Lloyd the Graffiti, to create an attractive piece of art.

In addition to the competition, young people will have the opportunity to participate in workshops to help create the art work. All kinds of designs are welcomed, and a panel of young people will decide on the winning designs by March 2022.

The creators of the winning design/s chosen by the young people’s panel will win an art pack and £50 voucher donated by Ceredigion Youth Service.

Cllr Catrin Miles, Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning & Skills, Support and Intervention said, “It is very important that young people’s views are considered when making decisions within our communities, providing young people with a sense of ownership and empowerment. This is an exciting opportunity where Ceredigion Youth Service will facilitate workshops for young people from the local primary and secondary schools and other groups to create a mural at an underpass in Penparcau, with the support of a professional artist. Therefore, we are encouraging young people from Penparcau, Aberystwyth and across Ceredigion to share their designs of what they would like to see in this spot!”

Ceredigion Youth Service welcomes designs from young people aged 9-25 from across Ceredigion, with particular attention to colour, font and images which represent Penparcau, Aberystwyth or areas surrounding the town, that are important to the young people. Designs should be accompanied by the name, age and contact number of the creator. Designs or ideas can be submitted to the Youth Service via email at [email protected]. Designs can also be handed to your local Youth Worker at all Ceredigion Secondary Schools. Postal address to send the designs; Ceredigion Youth Service, Ysgol Cwrtnewydd, Cwrtnewydd, Llanybydder, Ceredigion, SA40 9YW. The deadline for designs is 5.00pm on the 4th March 2022.

For any further information regarding the competition, please contact Paul Stubbs, Youth Worker on [email protected].
