John Moss reminds me forcibly of the words of a Catholic priest, an advocate of liberation theology in Brazil, named Helder Camara, who said, “When I gave food to the poor they called me a saint, but when I asked why the poor had no food they called me a communist”. (‘Driver is supply and demand’, Letters 29 October)

I have never discouraged private home ownership. However, like Dr Fitzgerald, in the same issue, I am adamant that “something has to change”.

To ultimately live in one’s home, mortgage free, should be a human right, but unlike John Moss, I do not have his faith that supply and demand will satisfy that need.
