Madam,

After all the nonsense that has been spoken and written regarding the proposed re-opening of the railway link between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen, it was a pleasure to read David Kirby’s letter (‘Many problems to overcome if rail line is to be reopened’, 6 December) regarding this issue.

It was a breath of fresh air, his common sense regarding this proposal.

The truth is that this railway line lost money when far fewer people possessed cars of their own.

To reinstate it, it is certain that the suggested figure of £775 million will be greatly exceeded, possibly to as much as £1.5 billion when all the major reconstruction of bridges and tunnels is taken into consideration.

Far better, surely, to spend this money more effectively elsewhere in Wales, improving public transport links and other public amenities.

In short, weigh a doubt against a certainty, no-one can argue against that.

Yours etc,

Siôn Griffiths, Trawsgoed.
