Rotary Club

This week’s speaker was John Bradshaw, who gave a lively presentation about his recent trip from New York to Los Angeles by motorbike.

This was a long-planned venture and complemented his earlier long-distance trip from the UK to China, fulfilling a long held ambition to complete a circuit of the northern hemisphere by motorbike.

In all this, John achieved his ambition of riding along part of the old Route 66.

John eventually reached the road’s end in Santa Monica on the Pacific Coast and had to negotiate US customs once again to get his bike cleared for shipping from Los Angeles back to the UK.

John learned some valuable lessons on the trip: allow twice as much time as you originally think for any dealings with US customs, always plan for the unexpected and make sure you take out travel insurance with a reputable company. Only then can you sit back and enjoy the ride.

Horticultural Society

With autumn upon us and the nights drawing in and the mornings getting noticeably cooler, September is always a busy time for gardeners with much produce harvesting and tidying up to be done.

This September is also turning out to be a busy month for members of the Cardiganshire Horticultural Society.

Sunday, 3 September saw some 30 members enjoying the last of the society’s 2017 summer outings with a day at Chester Zoo, looking at their marvellous gardens.

Two City of Chester tour guides took the party around shortly after arrival for a look to see at what was on offer and mid-way through the afternoon most of the party took the opportunity to enjoy a visit to the glasshouses and plant collections which are not normally open to the public.

The group saw some truly wonderful orchid and cacti collections and heard about the important plant conservation work the Zoo is doing with other Zoos and gardens in a number of countries.

The first of the 2017/18 programme of evening lectures in the Waunfawr Community Hall gets under way with a talk entitled Poisonous Plants – Lethal Lovelies, and, at the end of the month, 45 members will be enjoying a four-night trip to the Isle of Man, with the highlight being a visit to the new botanical garden which is being constructed on the island.

Further information on the society’s winter activities is available from the secretary, David Hughes on 01970 623125.

National Trust

On Thursday, 7 September, the Ceredigion Association of National Trust Members visited the Brecon Beacons.

Although the weather was inclement, everyone appreciated the day out starting with coffee and cakes at the Brecon Mountain Centre followed by a film and for most a walk to admire the scenary.

In the afternoon, the group transferred to the Brecon Mountain Railway where a steam train took them from Pant station to Tarpantau.

The next meeting is on 19 October, at Llanerchaeron being the AGM.

It is hoped that many will attend and that some members will volunteer to join the committee to help the society continue to function in the future.

On Wednesday, 15 November, another successful year will be celebrated at the annual luncheon to be held at St David’s University Lampeter.

The final get together of the year will be on Tuesday, 5 December for carols and refreshments at Llanerchaeron to celebrate the Adar of Christmas.
