Gardening club

THE speaker at the June meeting of Drefach Felindre Gardening Club was Malcolm Berry.

He gave a very interesting talk about biodiversity and using a mix of different approaches towards a Natural Garden. He talked about everything living in harmony together in the garden and keeping the balance between prey and predators. An interesting approach.

The annual plant sale was held at the Red Dragon Hall on Saturday, 11 May, and the weather was reasonable so they were able to have most of the plants outdoors. It was well supported and raised over £700 for the club and particularly towards the running of the Annual Horticultural and Craft show in September. Thanks must go to all of the helpers, those who supplied plants and all who came and supported the event.

Next month’s meeting will be on Wednesday, 3 July, when they will enjoy an evening with cheese and wine and some helpful hints for the cookery elements of the annual show by Elonwy James.

Elonwy is a Royal Welsh and local show judge and will share some tips as to what the judges are looking for and what to do and what to avoid in achieving the perfect bake.

Drefach Felindre Gardening Club meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at The Red Dragon Hall in Drefach Felindre from 7.30pm.

Free refreshments are served following the speaker’s presentation and club members bring along items for the raffle, such as spare plants and garden produce.

They also organise a seed swap. There is a warm welcome for everyone and guests pay a fee of £2 per meeting person which includes refreshments. Annual membership costs just £10. In addition, the club holds two plant sales every year in May and July. Donations of plants, gardening items and garden produce are much appreciated for these events and proceeds go towards community projects in Drefach Felindre such as the annual Horticultural and Craft Show held each year in September.

The club arranges visits to award winning and historic gardens, member’s gardens and specialist nurseries throughout the year. We also have a Dye Bed project linked with Ysgol Penboyr and the National Wool Museum in the village.
