Cymdeithas Hanes
THE May meeting of Cymdeithas Hanes Llambed, held at Trinity St David University, had two sections.
The first was the Annual General Meeting of the society.
The chairman Selwyn Walters outlined the healthy state of the membership numbers and the successful wide ranging society meetings which had taken place throughout the past twelve months.
The second section of the evening was a talk by Rhiannon of Tregaron, the proprietor of the famous shop in the town, which is almost 50 years old.
She explained how she came to set up what was initially a craft design centre.
She took the audience through the various stages in the development of the company, including its gold centre.
In the early days the shop sold hand made furniture, along with pottery and a wide range of Welsh made memorabilia.
Later Rhiannon moved to begin to make jewellery.
She showed slides of the jewellery created, often with imagery of the ancient history of Wales, sometimes using tales from the Mabinogion.
In order to widen the range of products sold the shop began to produce woven wolllen goods.
She explained how she had made items specifically commissioned, such as chains of office for community councils.
She started to make items from Welsh gold in 1986.
The Rhiannon enterprise remains a major feature within the center of Tregaron.
