WHO is the Best Boy anyway? The answer to this question, which was the title of the talk at the society’s monthly meeting, was the speaker, Richard Owen, a member and retired pharmacologist.

His lucid and expertly researched talk explored the arcane secrets of Best Boy and other obscure titles found in the world of the big screen.

His presentation concluded with pictures from the work of some of the world’s acclaimed cinematographers and designers.

The fascinating talk, following a delightful lunch, was well appreciated by his fellow members. Probus, a society for retired professional and business men meets on the last Thursday of the month and welcomes new members.

CAFWYD dau gyfarfod difyr iawn yn ddiweddar.

Daeth Dylan Rowlands o siop Dylanwad Dolgellau i roi ei hanes yn sefydlu’r busnes gan agor siop a th? bwyta poblogaidd iawn. Mae’n teithio’n helaeth i brofi gwin gan archebu’r gorau bob amser. Cafwyd hanes taith y gwin o’r pridd i’r botel a gwybodaeth defnyddiol iawn am win addas ar gyfer prydau bwyd. Mae Dylan a’i wraig wedi cyhoeddi Llyfr Bwyd a Gwin a gwelwn ef yn aml ar raglen Prynhawn Da S4C.

Cafwyd cwmni John Parry, Porthmadog yn yr ail gyfarfod gan fynd ar daith o Kathmandu i’r Base Camp, Everest neu Sagarmatha i’r brodorion. Antur a phrofiad mawr oedd y daith yma gyda Kemal trefnydd y daith a’i berthnasau yn gofalu amdanynt gan gario llwythi o offer i fyny’r llethrau serth.

Roedd dilyn y daith ar ffilm yn ddifyr iawn ond nid hawdd oedd ei cherdded. Doedd d?r afiach, poen bol, maes awyr Luka, ac effeithiau diffyg ocsigen ddim yn gwneud pethau’n hawdd. Cafwyd darlun byw o’r daith gan John.

Diolchwyd yn gynnes y ddwy noson gan Deilwen Evans. Cydymdeimlwyd â Caryl yn ei phrofedigaeth lem o golli ei nai. Enillwyr y raffl a’r bêl fonws oedd Sandra, Elliw, Meryl ac Annest.

WI

AT the St David’s day meeting of Porthmadog WI, members enjoyed a special evening, as Emma Buckley from Criccieth came to enthral them with her musical talents.

Although only 14 years old, Emma has won several prizes at Eisteddfodau and is obviously going to have an important musical future.

During the evening, Emma treated members to a variety of pieces on the harp, ranging from classical music to Welsh folk tunes and jazz before ending with a virtuoso performance on the piano of a movement from a Brahms’ concerto.

Finally she accompanied members as they joined together to sing Calon Lân and the Welsh national anthem. Elspeth Jones gave an enthusiastic vote of thanks on behalf of all the members, before also thanking Emma’s father for helping her bring the harp.

The evening ended with refreshments provided by the tea hostesses, Elspeth Jones, Meryl Roberts and Gweneth Jones Morris.
