A MORFA Nefyn pensioner who has never flown before will take on a daredevil wing walk this weekend for a charity close to his heart.
John Jackson, who is 72, will take on the challenge this Saturday September, to raise money for Canolfan Felin Fach.
Explaining why he wants to raise money for the Pwllheli-based centre, he said: “Times are hard for charities to raise funds, and this is especially so for a small charity.
“What I have set out to do is to try and raise some funds for Canolfan Felin Fach Centre, a small community mental health resource centre here is Pwllheli.
“On 12 September, having never flown before, I will be taking a wing walking flight on a 1940s biplane – a bit of a scary prospect.
“This will be a personal challenge and those who know me know I have never done anything like this before.
“I have no doubt I will feel much trepidation in anticipation of the much sought-after adrenaline rush.
“I do hope to raise some money for Felin Fach, a centre doing wonderful work each day to support people experiencing mental illness and health difficulties, and would be grateful of any support.”
Canolfan Felin Fach supports adults who are experiencing or recovering from difficulties in their lives, providing a comprehensive information base and drop-in support services, and relies on funding to keep the centre open.
John has set up a crowdfunding page and all proceeds from the wing walk will go to Canolfan Felin Fach.
“All expenses for the flight have been met by myself,” said John, who has a personal reason for raising this money,” he said.
“My wife is disabled and she has benefitted greatly from attending the centre.
“The last few months have been challenging for us all and demands on our community mental health resources may continue to increase in the future. Those experiencing mental health problems directly, or supporting a loved one through a difficult time, face daily challenges and know only too well how valuable community support is.”
He added: “The aircraft will carry a camera recording my reactions during the flight. Hopefully I won’t be looking too terrified!”
The flight will take place at an airfield near Cirencester in Gloucestershire and John, who hopes to raise £500, has raised £272 so far.
