A NEWCASTLE Emlyn man now living in Llandeilo has been appointed chair of Urdd Gobaith Cymru.

Dyfrig Davies was a secondary school teacher for a few years before becoming senior producer and one of the owners of Telesgop production company in Swansea.

He started competing at the Urdd Eisteddfod as a young boy and since then has been an adjudicator at local and at the National Eisteddfod.

For the past three years Dyfrig has been the chair of the Urdd Eisteddfod Board as well as being a member of the Central Eisteddfod Literature Committee.

Dyfrig said: “I consider the appointment to be both an honour and a big responsibility.

“I’d like to sincerely thank Tudur Dylan for his outstanding work over the years.

“Looking to the future, I’m looking forward to working with our new chief executive, Sian Lewis – it is an exciting time for the Urdd.”

He added: “Most of all, I’d like to see more and more opportunities for our members.

“Our centenary celebrations in 2022 will be an important milestone as will be securing partnerships that will expand the boundaries in terms of our work as we play an important role in reaching the Government’s aim of a million Welsh speakers.”
