A DVD aimed at educating young people of the consequences of playing with fire has been launched in a Pwllheli college.

Chwarae’n Wirion (Playing Stupid) is a DVD based on a sketch which has been written and performed by students at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in Pwllheli.

The DVD incorporates a scenario set out in the Operation Bang package, where a house fire cannot be attended immediately because the fire crews have been diverted to a skip fire which has been started by children.

PCSO Liz Jones said: “The Chwarae’n Wirion DVD project was an idea I had to deliver the Op Bang package in a different more impactive format in order to gain the children’s attention.

“As the scenario set out in the package is not Bonfire Night specific, the DVD can be used at any time of the year. With this in mind a copy of the DVD will be given to all our school liaison officers and I am hopeful that it can be used as a tool in dealing with offenders of low-level arson.”

The original DVD was produced through the medium of Welsh but Coleg Meirion Dwyfor students have translated the script into English, in preparation for it to be released by next February.
