A YOUNG group from Cardiff beat off competition from two other bands to win the prestigious Brwydr y Bandiau competition at the 2026 National Eisteddfod at Llantwd.

Penbleth's 20 minute set on Llwyfan y Maes on Wednesday afternoon was enthusiastically received by the audience and earned praise from the adjudicators.

Fronted by singer and lyricist Pegi Wigley, Penbleth were formed in 2025 through the Tafwyl ‘Yn Cyflwyno’ project.

The five-piece group released their debut single "S’dim clem da fi" earlier this year while also preparing for their GCSE exams.

The other members of the band are Ioan Brooks, Steffan Lewis, Steffan Jones, Aaron Owen-Griffiths and Gruffydd Rees.

They have already performed at notable venues like Clwb Ifor Bach and Tafwyl.

Brwydr y Bandiau is a partnership between the Eisteddfod and the BBC.

This aim is to discover talented new Welsh contemporary music. has become one of the major competitions for young bands.

The competition is open to bands who compose, produce and perform original contemporary popular music.

These contemporary genres include indie, electronic, urban, MOBO, pop, rock, world, contemporary folk and any other new and emerging contemporary musical genre.

Competitors needed to submit a demo or video recording of a set of up to four original songs.

The prize of £1,000 was given to the Eisteddfod by Cyngor Cymuned Eglwyswrw.
