A youth football tournament launched in memory of popular Llanilar FC coach Gary Pugh has raised a record amount for a children’s cancer charity.

The 2018 Gary Pugh Football Festival, which was held in September, was the 11th festival organised in memory of Gary and saw over 50 teams take part raising almost £1,415.

The money has now been donated to the Kids Cancer Charity (Wales) with Gary’s daughter Imogen presenting a cheque to the charity.

The popular tournament, which is now well established in the junior football calendar, was organised by Llanilar Football Club with assistance from Aberystwyth and District Junior Football League and took place at Blaendolau.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Over 50 teams took part, providing a wealth of football and an opportunity for players, coaches, parents and friends to pay tribute to the much-missed Gary’s hard work for local junior football.

“Verity, Murray and Imogen wish to thank all those sponsors and volunteers who contributed to a great footballing day.”

Attention is now switching to the organisation of next year’s tournament which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 1 September.
