LAMPETER town councillors are split over whether to acquire a town play area after Tai Ceredigion offered to lease it to them for £1 a year.
The town council has been in discussion with the housing association since August over the transfer of the Maes-y-Felin play area, with the housing association arguing they can no longer justify it because the area is no longer in their ownership and the play area is used by the whole community.
At a full meeting of the town council last Thursday, councillors discussed an offer from Tai Ceredigion, whereby the town council would lease the play area from Tai Ceredigion at £1 a year for 150 years.
Cllr Hag Harris said he would feel more comfortable if the town council owned the play area outright.
He said: “This would be taking over quite a responsibility as a public body – is it better to own it or lease it?
“This is going to cost us £700 a year to maintain, so do we want to embark on that?
“We should request a ‘golden hello’ if we want to lease it.”
