A PREFERRED option has been chosen for a new bus station in Dolgellau, but residents are still split over the best course of action.
The bus interchange has been the subject of much debate in recent months with residents arguing for and against maintaining Eldon Square as the main bus terminus for the town.
The county council has now ruled in favour of the main bus stop remaining in Eldon Square –but with drivers changing over at the Lloyds Coaches depot.
The council told the Cambrian News it was clear from the consultation with the public that the majority favoured the status quo in Eldon Square.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Officers from the council’s Transportation Service are currently considering options so that Eldon Square can remain the main bus stop location, with Traws Cymru buses interchanging at the Lloyds Coaches depot in the town.
“No decision has been taken, and work is currently being carried out to consider the practicalities of implementing these options.”
Some locals were concerned that there was too much crowding and pollution in the square and that accidents were likely to occur if buses were to remain – as happened when an elderly woman was struck by a bus last August – but others believed that Eldon Square was the most accessible, sensible option for a bus stop.
