A CONSULTATION into introducing parking charges along Aberystwyth promenade will begin early in 2016, council officials have confirmed.

The controversial proposal has been put forward by consultants for Ceredigion Council who have claimed that it could help raise vital funds for the authority, despite the idea being strongly opposed by some Aberystwyth councillors.

A workshop with consultants Capita was held at the end of November which saw invitations sent out to representatives of a range of groups.

But transport Cabinet member Alun Williams said a full public consultation would be held to give members of the public the chance to comment on the proposal and that the workshop was a “place to start”.

He added: “We’re not going to take any rushed decisions. We have to practice due diligence.”

Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies said it was important that Aberystwyth residents and those who would be affected by any new charge were given the chance to have their say.

Highways director Huw Morgan said a full consultation would be launched early in 2016.

Town councillors and Aberystwyth Chamber of Commerce have raised doubts about the introduction of parking charges on the prom, questioning whether it will drive people away from the town.
