Madam,
Terry Spiers’ complaints regarding lack of waste collection in Aberystwyth are timely. The same negligence can also be seen further afield.
On recent journeys from Aberystwyth to north Wales, I was genuinely shocked to see how much litter there was along the sides of the road, from the top of Penglais all the way to Caernarfon, much of it thrown out of car windows without a thought for the environment.
Where will this end? It is a health hazard and an invitation to vermin, and inevitably a turn-off for many visitors and a blow to the local economy.
Given that the root problem is people’s insensitivity to the environment (at odds with the professed concern for climate change), waste collection nevertheless kept the damage within bounds, but now that this service has been cut to the bone, can we expect anything more than a further accumulation of rubbish, and less and less service as our council tax rises yearly?
Yours etc,
I Daniel, Waunfawr, Aberystwyth.
