Madam,

Over the years, the Rotary Club of Aberystwyth has offered financial support to a number of young people from the Aberystwyth area wishing to travel abroad for humanitarian and experience widening purposes. The club is proposing to run its scholarship scheme again this year.

Any young person up to and including the age of 21 with a permanent address in the Aberystwyth area can apply. Applications are invited from schoolchildren and from college and university students, but a student with an address in Aberystwyth does not meet the qualifying criteria of the scheme.

The scheme is not available to those who simply want to travel abroad. There must be a clear-cut purpose for the overseas visit.

A wide variety of possibilities will be considered, including working on a short-term humanitarian project in the health, housing and educational fields; participation in officially sponsored work programmes (e.g. Operation Raleigh and the British Schools Exploration society) as well as representing their local area in worldwide events (e.g. Scout and Guide Jamborees).

This list is by no means exhaustive and other possibilities will be considered.

Initially those interested are invited to submit a written application. There is no application form but potential applicants should include a CV and a detailed letter of application which will incorporate full details of the purpose of the visit and what it is you hope to gain from the visit. Where the visit is being organised by a humanitarian or charitable body, you will also need to include literature about the organisation and the project details.

The closing date for the receipt of written applications for projects which will take place in the summer of 2016 is 31 January 2016. Please send the completed applications to: Rotarian John Pugh-Jones, Gwen y Wawr, Capel Dewi, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, SY23 3HR (Tel: 01970 828238).

The Rotary Club may well decide to invite one or more candidates for interview before coming to a final decision.

Yours etc,

John Pugh-Jones,

Foundation Committee,

Rotary Club of Aberystwyth.
