THEY say it’s never too late – and that is certainly true for retired chef and now beauty queen Sue Kevans.

The sprightly pensioner has just been selected as carnival queen of Llanon – at the age of 73!

A delighted Sue beat off strong opposition from rivals in their 60s, 70s and 80s to win the coveted carnival queen sash. Attendant Dorothy Davies is 87, while fellow attendant Betty Jones is in her late 70s.

The carnival queen parade with a difference was the brainchild of Harriet Sinclair who stipulated that all entrants had to be over 60.

“Let’s face it, the idea of a carnival queen is all a bit 1970s and the young girls of the village just weren’t interested,” she told the Cambrian News.

“There was no carnival last year and no queen the year before that and the whole event just seemed to be petering out – the community seemed to have had enough of it.

“But we are trying to get it going again – there are so many different clubs in Llanon and we’re looking for their support.

“No carnival should be without a carnival queen and the older ladies of the village have been up for it.”
