In answer to the letter ‘Grandfather would be horrified’ (12 November), here are a few facts: 21 million members of the armed forces were injured in World War One and eight million died.
Five hundred million people were infected by Spanish ‘flu, which killed more than 20 million in a little over two years.
To date, Covid-19 has already killed more than one and a quarter million people in eight months.
My grandfather, who fought in World War One, was gassed in the trenches but survived and lived through Spanish flu, would be so grateful to know that we now have a healthcare system which is freely available to all and that the majority of people are doing their utmost to protect everyone in the community.
Each and every death is a tragedy. Perhaps my grandfather would also be horrified – that some people aren’t taking this plague seriously!
