Madam,

In the wake of my defeat in last week’s general election can I place on record my heartfelt gratitude to those who supported me in the polls, and more generally to all the people of Ceredigion who have supported me over the past 12 years as Member of Parliament and 17 years as a Liberal candidate in our county. Nothing will diminish that gratitude despite my defeat. Ceredigion remains my home, and that of my family and I look forward to enjoying it all the more now that my circumstances have changed.

I unreservedly congratulate Ben Lake on his victory and the way that he himself conducted his campaign. Like me in 2005, he faces a challenging and demanding role in the months and years ahead, and I know he will pursue this important job with diligence and passion. More than ever west Wales needs a continued effective voice at Westminster, and he has my complete support in that.

As I am no longer an MP, my constituency office has to close. Should constituents require the return of paperwork please contact my office as soon as possible to arrange collection.

Can I also thank my marvellous staff in Aberystwyth and London who have worked so hard for Ceredigion. I wish Bryony Davies, Juliet Price, Liam Clements and councillors Michael Chappell and Charlie Kingsbury the very best of luck in their futures.

My thanks also to Mark Cole, Elizabeth Evans, Lorrae Jones-Southgate, Lisa Francis and Martin Squires who have worked for me over the years, and helped literally thousands of residents.

For me personally, of course a defeat is painful, but I don’t regret in any way participating in a democratic system which has the risks of defeat as well as victory. Indeed, in these troubled global times, it is more important than ever that we defend our democratic values, and with an enhanced turnout last Thursday our county understands that need.

After a necessary period of rest and reflection in the coming weeks, I will obviously seek a new role. My belief in the need for Liberal voices remains undiminished. From my wife and I, to all those who have helped and supported us in Ceredigion, thank you for the last 12 years.

Yours etc,

Mark Williams,

Liberal Democrat MP for Ceredigion 2005-2017, Borth.
