MACHYNLLETH councillors have backed a new footbridge at the town’s train station despite concerns over its “industrial appearance”.

Councillors at a meeting last week said the new access would encourage more people to visit the town.

Cllr Michael Williams told members: “I’m absolutely delighted at the new footbridge.

“It’s something we have been calling for for years.

“We have seen a huge increase in passenger journeys and more and more people are using the station, including parents with children and disabled people.

“They deserve better access services and that is what this new footbridge and lift gives.”

Cllr Rhydian Mason said: “This is going to make it easier for everyone to use the railway station.

“Not just residents but also visitors who will spend their pounds and pennies in Machynlleth.
