A UNIVERSITY professor from Machynlleth has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Prof Lynda Warren was awarded the BEM for services toward environmental protection after serving on a specialist radioactive waste management committee.

Prof Warren, an Emeritus professor of environmental law at Aberystwyth University, as well as being an honorary professor at Bangor University, is a former deputy chair of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management which independently scrutinises.

She provides advice to the UK Government on the long-term issues of management of higher activity radioactive waste.

She joined the body in 2003 and has more than 15 years’ experience of radioactive waste management.

Before joining the RWM committee, she had held a position on the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee, as well as being on the board of British Geological Survey until the board was scrapped in April 2011.

Prof Warren has played a part in a number of environmental protection bodies over the years, including being a member of the Board of Natural Resources Wales, and also holding a seat on DEFRA’s Science Advisory Council.

Prof Warren has over 100 academic publications to her name on subjects which include radioactive waste management law and policy.

She also has postgraduate degrees in marine biology and law.
