A LLANYBYDDER student became the envy of all Coldplay fans on Tuesday when she was chosen to sing the Welsh national anthem at the band’s sellout concert in Cardiff.

Elin Hughes, a student at University of Wales Trinity St Davids, joined Chris Martin and the band on stage at the end of their sellout show in the Principality Stadium.

Elin has just finished her first year studying the Welsh-medium BA Perfformio (Performance) course with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Cardiff and was ecstatic at being given the honour of singing with Coldplay during the first of their shows at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

Earlier this week, Eilir Owen Griffiths, co-ordinator of the BA Perfformio course received a call from a member of Coldplay’s production team asking if one of his students would be willing to sing the anthem at the end of their set - and of course, Elin jumped at the chance.

“I’m so excited,” said 19-year-old Elin. “I’ve been a huge Coldplay fan for years so it was absolutely amazing to have the opportunity to perform with them.

“I’ve been very fortunate to receive a number of fantastic experiences during my time on the course, but this was one of the best things I’ve ever done. However, I would never have had the opportunity to sing last night if it wasn’t for the great connections my lecturers have, so I’m extremely grateful to them for thinking about me."

“It was amazing to sing the anthem with Chris Martin and the band and to hear 60,000 voices singing along with us,” said Elin, who’s hoping for a career in musical theatre.

“I’m so grateful to have been given this incredible opportunity – it’ll be an experience that will stay with me forever.”

Mr Griffiths said: “We are so pleased and proud that Elin was given the opportunity to represent the course on such a massive occasion.

"With a huge crowd at the stadium, some 60,000 people will have had the chance to hear Elin sing and to witness her sharing a stage with one of the world’s biggest bands.

"Last night will have been an experience and an evening that Elin will never forget.”
