Madam,

Whilst swimming in the sea at a Spanish resort I was carried out by a strong current. It was the second time that day that I had been in the water, with no problems the first time, and had not realised that the current had changed.

I had a desperate and exhausting struggle to get back to the shore, during which I saw and heard a woman thrashing around and screaming. I could do nothing to help but fortunately a strong and fast swimmer came to her rescue.

Once safe on land I looked out to sea where a dinghy with two lifeguards was patrolling up and down on the lookout for unwitting people like myself.

This was back in the seventies. What have we got at present to safeguard swimmers? Not even two men in a boat!

Yours etc,

Roy Peel, Llanelltyd.
