Madam,

I refer to the article ‘Plea to reopen disused church rejected’ in last week’s Cambrian News. The Bishop of Menevia is incorrect when he states that it is the Vatican which will not allow St Winefride’s Church to be re-opened. In fact, the Vatican has stated that it will not re-open its decision on appeals against the closure. As we have been told time and time again by the Vatican, by the Apostolic Nuncio and by the head of the Catholic Church in Wales and England (Cardinal Vincent Nicholls), the closure or re-opening of a church “is a matter for the local bishop”. Why then does he continue to ignore the only sensible solution to the plight of the Catholic community in Aberystwyth?
