DOLGELLAU Athletic booked their place in the next round of the FAW Amateur Trophy after Osian Morris struck a dramatic late winner in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cerrigydrudion on Saturday.
Dol made the perfect start, taking the lead after just four minutes. A slick move was capped by an inch-perfect pass from Morris, allowing Gerwyn Williams to fire home confidently and put the visitors ahead.
The visitors enjoyed plenty of promising possession but were unable to extend their advantage. Cerrigydrudion gradually grew into the contest and drew level midway through the first half when Jac Edwards raced through on goal and finished calmly.
Dolgellau responded in ideal fashion on the stroke of half-time, with Williams producing another emphatic left-footed finish to restore their lead.
The hosts hit back early in the second period after a defensive mix-up allowed Elis Jones to capitalise and make it 2-2. Dolgellau were struggling to find their rhythm, but they regained the advantage on 54 minutes when Jamie Jones met Nyasha Mwamuka’s corner with a first-time finish.
The tie remained finely balanced and Cerrigydrudion refused to give in. Tegid Williams brought the hosts level once more, converting from a long throw to set up a tense finale.
Determined to avoid the uncertainty of a penalty shootout, Dolgellau pushed forward in search of a winner. Their persistence paid off when Guto Pugh’s long-range effort was parried, with Morris reacting quickest to the loose ball to slot home the decisive goal and send his side into the last 16 of the competition.
Manager Rob Evans said: “It was a poor performance overall, but that was down to Cerrig and all their hard work.
“Fair play to our boys for sticking at it and showing their quality when it mattered most.”
