Three former Aberystwyth Town players are set to rejoin the JD Welsh Premier League club as the Seasiders step up their early pre-season preparations.

Welsh Cup finalists in 2018, Malcolm Melvin and Joe Phillips have both returned to Park Avenue, along with striker Porya Rio Ahmadi as the squad takes shape.

Central midfielder Melvin originally joined Aber from Halesowen in January 2017, and spent 18 months at the Club, before leaving before the start of last season.

Despite being born in Birmingham, he has played for Scotland at Under 17s, 18s and 19s level, and he has represented Walsall, Crewe, Aston Villa, Notts County, Barwell and Sutton Coldfield.

Phillips originally signed for Aberystwyth in July 2017, having played for the same Stourport Swifts side as Ryan Wollacott, netting 16 goals in 46 appearances in 2016/7. He left the Seasiders for a brief spell at Alvechuch last season.

Striker Ahmadi joined the Seasiders last summer after spells with Bangor City and Rhyl, having also represented Sheffield United, Chorley, Droylsden and Salford City. He scored five goals for Aber in the first phase of last season, before leaving to join Newtown in January 2019.

Meanwhile the Aber squad is also set to be further bolstered by defender Leo Riley, from Cymru Alliance champions Airbus UK Broughton.

The 23 year-old made 40 Welsh Premier appearances for a successful Llandudno side between 2015 and 2017, before joining Airbus and helping the Wingmakers to a title triumph this spring with 20 appearances and 4 goals.

He has also previously played for Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Liverpool as a youth team player.

Defender Ben Birch is also set to join from West Midlands champions Tividale, where the 23 year-old had scored six goals in 41 games.

Birch had previously signed a professional contract at Mansfield Town, and went on to play in Australia in the 2016-2017 season. His previous clubs also include Redditch and Stourbridge.

Furthermore, right-sided midfielder Alex Boss is also set to join Aber, having been one of Bangor City’s best performers in last season’s Cymru Alliance campaign.

Still only 19 years old, and a product of the Citizens’ Academy, he has also played for Holyhead Hotspur.

The big name signing revealed last month was 35 year-old striker Les Davies, a veteran of the Welsh Premier League, who guided Bangor City to title glory in 2011, and a hat-trick of Welsh Cup wins between 2008 and 2010.

From last season’s squad, Terry McCormick, Ryan Edwards, Ryan Wollacott, Marc Williams, Wes Baynes and Paolo Mendes have already committed for next season, along with Ceredigion’s own Geoff Kellaway, Mathew Jones and Lee Jenkins. Club captain Declan Walker, however, has left the Seasiders.
