SEVERAL years had passed since Port last defeated Bangor, but they managed it at Y Traeth on a sunny afternoon at the end of a tight, competitive match in front of a strong crowd, writes Treflyn Jones.
After a rather scrappy opening quarter of an hour, with both team’s content to hoof the ball into the Land of Somewhere, the game burst into life thanks to an excellent goal from Dylan Summers‑Jones.
A corner was won by Port following a superb save by Josh Davies in the Bangor goal from Tom Mahoney’s left‑footed strike. From that corner, a fine header by Cai Jones fell perfectly for Summers‑Jones, who hammered a superb looping volley into the roof of the net, leaving Davies helpless.
A few slick moves then emerged from the Citizens as they tried to fight back, and Port’s defence were relieved to see Jack Smith’s dangerous effort evade the crossbar by mere inches.
Then, somewhat unexpectedly during a spell of pressure from the visitors, Port came within a whisker of doubling their lead when Summers‑Jones missed a golden chance. He did everything right, beating the offside trap and racing through on goal. He rounded the keeper and, with the goal smiling at him, an incredibly well‑timed tackle denied him the finish. What a twist.
During the final quarter of the first half, you could sense Bangor growing more and more into the game with that slick passing that has been so characteristic of them over the years
But Port’s defence stood firm, and Port almost grabbed a second goal but for a low save by Josh Davies on 40 minutes. The first half ended with Port leading 1–0.
Very early in the second half, Bangor had a clear chance to level. James Barry broke free of the Port defence and managed to head past Robbie Williams, who had rushed out to meet him, but in doing so the angle became too tight for the attacker to get a shot on target, giving Port supporters a huge sigh of relief.
The game became a little more open as we approached the hour mark, and Cai Jones (Port) was extremely unlucky to see his header beat the keeper but be cleared off the line.
Then, at the other end, Robbie Williams produced a superb save to deny a precise low shot aimed at the far corner. A minute later, Robbie again had to save brilliantly with his right foot as Bangor increased the pressure.
Port continued to attack whenever possible, with Tom Mahoney and Luke Baum both going close before the end.
In the end, Port were deserved winners, and it was a particular delight for the young supporters to witness such an excellent and memorable victory against the old enemy. Well done, Port. Very well done indeed.
Next Saturday, Port travel to the Wrexham area to face Gresford, with kick‑off at 2:30pm.
Gresford beat Penrhyncoch 1-0 at Cae Baker on Saturday.
