Aberystwyth footballer Rhys Norrington-Davies says Wales are in a great position to clinch promotion to Group A of UEFA’s Nation’s League following their hard fought 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday.

Sheffield United’s Norrington-Davies, on loan at Luton’s Town this season, impressed down the left in the wing back role at Cardiff City Stadium.

David Brooks' headed goal on 66 minutes was the difference between the two sides in a physical affair with referee Petr Ardeleanu producing seven yellow cards.

And that leaves Wales needing only a point from the final game against Finland on Wednesday to clinch promotion to the UEFA Nations League Group A.

The former Ysgol Penglais pupil said: “It’s a great win. I thought the team did the basics well which meant we kept a clean sheet.

“It opened up more for us in the second half and could have been a lot more than just the one goal."

The 21-year-old added: “The win puts us in a great position and it’s something we can build on going into Wednesday’s game.

“The game against Finland is massive. It’s simple, win and we top the group which puts us in a great position going forwards.

“Everybody believes in each other and that we can produce something special.”More on this story in this week’s Cambrian News in shops on Thursday
