MADOC Yacht Club (MYC) welcomed 169 rowers and many supporters on Saturday, 1 August, as it hosted one of the Welsh Sea Rowing (WSR) Northern League’s regular fixtures, writes Lynne Gilbertson.

Widely regarded as the club’s biggest social event of the year, the regatta attracted crews from 11 clubs competing in Celtic Longboat races across Senior, Ladies, Mixed and Novice categories, with events spanning several age groups.

Mostly dry weather, with spells of sunshine and cloud, provided ideal conditions for spectators gathered on the clubhouse terrace, although competitors faced a demanding course with headwinds on the outward leg and changing tides.

Despite the challenge, the atmosphere remained lively throughout the day as supporters cheered crews across the finish line.

MYC rower Simon summed up the effort required with a smile afterwards, saying: “I was out of breath by the finishing line. I couldn’t push any harder—I would have pushed straight through the floor.”

There was plenty to celebrate on the water.

MYC’s Ladies Super Veterans crew delighted the home crowd with a well-earned victory, while Aberdyfi enjoyed the most successful day overall, recording the highest number of race wins.

Off the water, MYC once again earned praise for its hospitality.

Volunteers started early by serving bacon butties from the barbecue before racing began, and later laid on the club’s renowned buffet lunch, offering an impressive selection of homemade dishes for competitors, officials and supporters.

The day’s success was recognised during the prize presentation by Rowing Committee Chair Mike, who thanked the many volunteers whose efforts made the event possible.

He praised the teamwork behind the scenes, the Madoc Yacht Club and the visiting clubs whose support and sportsmanship helped make the regatta such an enjoyable occasion.

Club Commodore Kaz Spring reflected on the event, saying: “It was just the best day all round. I’m feeling very proud to be part of such an outstanding rowing section and an absolutely amazing team.

“Well done to everyone who took part today, including all our volunteers.”

The day also had its lighter moments, with Oggy the dog deciding that every winners’ photograph needed him in it.

The friendly four-legged spectator wandered into several presentation photos, raising smiles all round and becoming one of the day’s unexpected stars.

As crews and supporters gathered back at the clubhouse, there was a shared sense of achievement.

More than just another league fixture, the MYC regatta showcased the competitive spirit, friendship and community that lie at the heart of Welsh Sea Rowing, once again confirming its place as one of the highlights of the Northern League calendar.
