Ceredigion council have announced that the “traditional” Donkey rides that take place on Aberystwyth promenade during the summer will not be allowed to take place this year.

Ceredigion County Council says it will not be inviting applications for any children’s rides and activities that take place on the promenade in Aberystwyth, such as donkey rides, fairground rides, or trampolines.

Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies said: “It is regrettable but understandable that the local authority will not allow donkey rides along the seafront this year due to the Covid situation.

“As the local councillor I would wish to support this traditional seaside activity and look forward to seeing them back on the promenade next year.”

A spokesperson for Ceredigion council said: “Every year, Ceredigion County Council receives a range of requests for licences to operate Children’s rides and activities on the promenade in Aberystwyth.

"The rides usually include the likes of fairground rides, trampolines, and donkey rides.

“In considering these, potential risks were identified which include impacts on social distancing, risk of contamination from physical contact with equipment and/or operators, and risks arising from higher footfall and traffic around the promenade area.

“For public health reasons associated with the Covid-19 situation it was agreed not to invite applications for these activities on or near the promenade area this year.”
