CEREDIGION council have been slammed for failing to ensure a specific dementia facility was included at the new Maes y Mor housing project in Trefechan.
The North Ceredigion Forum for Older People Care members said they are “baffled as to why other similar projects have included specific dementia friendly units, which was believed to be a priority for Ceredigion Council.”
Forum Chair, and former Ceredigion MP, Mark Williams said: “We know that specific dementia friendly residential units are a feature of other housing projects, such as the excellent Llys Jasmine in Mold, which was build by Wales and West in partnership with Flintshire, and which our council will be familiar with.
“That project includes special apartments for people living with dementia, alongside extra care.
“But where is the council’s vision and commitment on this issue?
“We as a Forum welcome Maes y Mor, but deeply regret that Ceredigion seem not to have insisted on a specific dementia facility, and did not work with Wales and West to achieve this.
“We all surely know that a dementia diagnosis can vary considerably from mild, to very severe, and so yet again we are faced with the tragedy of Ceredigion residents often facing care, miles away from their relatives.
“What progress, if any, have Ceredigion Council made on this issue in recent years?
“It is hard to see any.”
