A FIRE in Fairbourne has scorched the beach and prevented the local heritage railway from operating.

A thick column of smoke can be seen from miles around as the blaze, spread over 150 metres of heathland, rages on this afternoon.

Fairbourne Railway has stopped trains from running while the fire is being dealt with during this mini Welsh heatwave.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue has confirmed that three appliances are currently battling the fire who have been on the scene since the initial call out at 1pm.
