Madam,

I am writing in response to Tony Jones’ letter (31 March), stating that a likely side effect of our electoral system in Wales will be the election of former Tory, now UKIP candidate, Neil Hamilton, as one of our Assembly Members in the Mid and West Wales region.

This does not have to be an ‘almost certain’ occurrence. I would urge all voters who, like myself, are dismayed at the prospect of being represented in Cardiff Bay by Mr Hamilton, to vote for the Wales Green Party on the regional ballot paper. With Plaid Cymru, Labour and the Lib Dems likely to take three of the four regional list seats, the remaining seat could well be a fight between UKIP and the Greens. The Green’s lead list candidate Alice Hooker-Stroud, who lives in Machynlleth, has a real chance of becoming the party’s first AM. Mr Hamilton or Ms Hooker-Stroud - I know who I’d rather see elected!

Yours etc

B Freeman
